Bamboo Story

So renowned is bamboo for its protean growth that it is the object of many legends involving the birth of children to old couples. Bamboo leaves transubstantiated from light-on-dark to dark-on-light impart a marvelously luminous quality. Snow edges the roof of Kosokuji Temple so as to resemble the rough deckle edges of etching paper.

Komyoji Snow Garden

The pond and garden, designed by Enshu Kobori, give a dreamy vision of the paradise at the center of the Pure Land (Jodo) sect of Buddhism. Adding to its timeless air in summer are lotus blossoms, descendants of 2000-year-old seeds discovered and coaxed into life in the 20th century by botanist Ichiro Oga.

View from a cave behind the Mitsunori residence where followers of Nichiren were imprisoned. Their devotion so impressed Mitsunori that he released them so that he could accept instruction from them. The kanji characters in the name Mitsunori can also be read as Kosokuji.
